starting a new small business
ESTABLISH YOUR WHY.
So you're starting a small home business? Before you do anything else, get out a piece of paper and write the answer to this question: Why are you starting a new small business?Write the number one thing in ALL CAPS at the top of the page. Elaborate on your answer with your reasons -- large and small -- for being in business for yourself. When I was first starting a new small business, it was FREEDOM. To do what I want to do when I want to do it. It's so I can make decisions about my life - and the lives of my children -- without the constraints of an employer who dictates when I must work and how much I get paid.
It's so I can go on vacation any time I want and so I can achieve my greatest potential and a life completely without limits. That's my "why" and it inspires me! Yours should inspire you, too. Because the going will sometimes get tough and you'll ask yourself WHY you ever got yourself into this home business thing -- and perhaps even WHY BOTHER? At times like these, all I have to do is glance at my big why -- on paper, yes, but I keep it fresh in my head even after 8-1/2 years of entrepreneurship -- and instantly regain my purpose and vision for my life. So your why must be bigger than all those challenges that come up for you. Bigger than rejection by prospective customers or team members. Bigger than the security of not getting a steady paycheck. Bigger than the nay-saying of well-meaning family and friends. Bigger than the lowest low you can imagine for your business. Your why will sustain you so speak it often and wear it well.
